McCarthy without Car

4 days and 3 nights from/to Anchorage

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park is the largest National Park in Alaska and home to 16 of the 20 highest mountain peaks in the United States. If you don’t have a vehicle and still want to discover the marvels of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, this is a great option for you. Travel from Anchorage to McCarthy/Kennicott by bus, spend two full days there, join a Glacier Hike and a guided tour through Kennicott.

Day 1

Anchorage to McCarthy

You will be picked up at your accommodation in Anchorage around 8AM. On the ten-hour, narrated trip by van, you see some of Alaska's most impressive mountains, rivers, and glaciers, while traveling on the scenic Glenn Highway, Richardson Highway, and the rugged McCarthy Road. There are plenty of stops for pictures and stretching legs, including a break at the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park Visitor Center near Copper Center. At 6PM the van arrives at the footbridge at the end of the McCarthy Road. A representative of your accommodation will pick you up at the bridge.

Day 2

McCarthy/Kennicott

Today you will join a half-day Glacier Hike, one of the most impressive activities in this area. You will explore the spectacular canyons, crystal clear streams, waterfalls, blue pools and crevasses of the Root Glacier! Your guide takes you to the best places. The tour is approximately 5 hours and involves a 5‐6 miles total hiking. The remainder of the day is at your leisure. If you feel like more action you can upgrade to a full day glacier hike (surcharges apply).

Day 3

McCarthy/Kennicott

The McCarthy area also boots much history. Kennecott was the most bountiful copper mine of the world and provided over 591.535 tons of copper. About 800 people were employed at its peak. A 2-hour tour takes you through the old mine building or the historic buildings. After the tour you still have plenty of time to join more activities like flightseeing or ziplining (surcharge applies). Or you can explore the area by yourself on the Old Wagon Trails.

Day 4

McCarthy to Anchorage

The return transfer will depart from the McCarthy footbridge at 10AM. Once again enjoy the scenery along the road. There will be a rest stop at Chitina or Glennallen for lunch as well as a few other short breaks for stretching legs. Arrival in Anchorage will be around 6:30PM.
