This classic selfdrive tour takes you to Alaska's major attractions within just one week. Some of the highlights are tours into Denali and Kenai Fjords National Park. You are staying at good, clean accommodations with a good price/service-ratio. This is your ideal selfdrive if you do not have a lot of time, or if you want to extend the package with a stay at a Lodge or some bear viewing!
Spend the day exploring Alaska's biggest city. There is lots to do: Visit the museum, enjoy a walk along the waterfront or explore the downtown area. If you happen to be there on Saturday or Sunday the downtown market is worth a visit.
Anchorage to Denali (231 miles)
Drive on the Glenn and Parks Highways to Denali National Park. The road is paved the whole way. Enjoy the spectacular scenery along the way. Weather permitting you can catch a great view of Mt. Denali. Overnight in Healy, close to the Denali National Park entrance.
Denali to Fairbanks (125 miles)
In the morning, you take a 6 to 8 hour bus tour into Denali National Park. This is one of your best opportunities to spot wildlife, including bears, moose, caribou or even wolves! While the ride on the park shuttle bus is not narrated, it gives you the freedom to get off the bus and do some hiking and afterwards taking a different bus back to the park entrance. Bring your own food and beverages, as no food or beverages are available once you depart the Wilderness Access Center.
Fairbanks to Paxson (175 miles)
Drive on the Richardson Highway from Fairbanks to Paxson. As you leave Fairbanks, you follow the Tanana and the Delta Rivers up into the Alaska Range mountains. Stop and watch the salmon spawn on the other side of the pass and take in the impressive landscape! Overnight between Delta Junction and Paxson or near Paxson.
Paxson to Matanuska (188 miles)
This beautiful drive from Paxson to the Matanuska Area leads you along the Glenn Highway, declared as National Scenice Byway in 2002. Scenic views of mountains as well as the Matanuska Glacier will showcase nature's beauty today. Overnight in Sheep Mountain or Palmer area.
Matanuska to Seward (242 miles)
The Glenn Highway closely parallels the Matanuska River towards Anchorage, and after a possible lunch stop in Alaska's biggest city, you continue southward on the Seward Highway to Seward. The highway offers outstanding sightseeing and wildlife viewing opportunities, including spawning salmon and a number of good hiking trails. Seward is a small fishing village with an excellent aquarium, the Alaska SeaLife Center.
Seward to Anchorage (130 miles)
Explore the magnificent Kenai Fjords National Park on a Cruise Tour in the morning. This 6-hour whale-watching/glacier cruise takes you to Holgate Glacier. Discover the diverse marine wildlife. Lunch is included. After your cruise, depart Seward for the drive back to Anchorage.
Your tour ends today. Return your rental car and depart Anchorage.
