A beautiful lake, campsites alongside, loons calling while watching you – this is the Alaska our Alaska & Yukon Specialist Irene escapes to when having a few days off.
Hiking in Whitehorse area
If you are in Whitehorse and looking for some great hikes – here is what I can recommend – all within a 30 minutes’ drive from Downtown Whitehorse.
Fish Lake Trail (2.5 hours, 7 km, elevation ca. 400m)
This trail starts at the shore of Fish Lake, a 25-minutes’ drive from Whitehorse. It leads steadily uphill and takes you above the tree line, offering stunning views to Fish Lake and Bonneville Lake. I did this hike in spring, in summer and in fall. Every season is beautiful and unique and there is always something to explore.
If you are doing this hike in spring or early summer, there might be pieces of ice glisten in the lake. Your summer hike could be late at night, and you will still have daylight because of the midnight sun. If you hike up this trail in fall, you can enjoy the beautiful colors and do some berry picking.
No matter what season you do this hike, the beautiful views across the endless expanses of the Yukon are always worth the trip!
Hidden Lakes Trail (2 hours, 5 km)
Just a footstep away from Downtown Whitehorse are the Hidden Lakes, a great network of trails around lakes and ponds. If you are looking for an easy 2-hour-hike, the Hidden Lakes Trail are a great opportunity. On this trail, you will walk through aspen and pine forests and over rolling hills with great views of the three lakes. It is also a good place for birdwatching as there are different species of birds and ducks living in this area.
Whenever you are in Whitehorse and having at least half of a day without plans, this would be a good insider tip.
