Low impact bear viewing for the true nature enthusiast

Who hasn’t seen the pictures? You know them. Grizzlies jockey for the best fishing spot among the cascades, reaching out to grab a meal as the salmon jump upstream through the waterfalls. These are scenes from Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, and a visit to Katmai is certain to be the highlight of your Alaska trip. If you want to see bears, this is the place. The best time to travel to Katmai to see the world-famous bear activity is during the salmon runs from July to the beginning of August, and then again in September.
Brooks Lodge overlooks the world famous Brooks River in the heart of Katmai National Park. The lodge, originally conceived as a fishing camp, has been in operation since 1950. The facilities have seen continuous upgrading. The beautiful main lodge building boasts a spectacular view of the aquamarine Naknek Lake. Its large circular fireplace is popular for evening relaxing and reminiscing about the day’s adventures. The World Famous bear viewing at Brooks Falls is only a short walk from Katmailand’s Brooks Lodge. As many as fifty bears live along the mile and a half long Brooks River during the salmon season.
To get there is an adventure in itself: You will fly from Anchorage to King Salmon, where you meet your air taxi to the Brooks Camp. There you have one to three days to do all the bear-viewing you want, right there around the camp.
Due to a high demand for overnight accommodation at Brooks Lodge, a random lottery system has been created for the opportunity to book a room at the Lodge.
Applications for the 2026 Brooks Lodge Lottery are available from December 1st, 2024, through December 31st, 2024.
Please note this lottery is for space during summer 2026. The drawing for the 2025 season has already occurred.
