Start with a walk through the historic Kennicott Millsite. Admire the buildings and learn the story of how this National Historic Landmark came to be, then after a moderate two and a half mile hike you will access the glacier.
A moderate two and a half mile trail to the glacier gives you a chance to learn from your guide about the geology, glaciology, flora and fauna of the area. Along the way you will have striking views overlooking the glacier and of Mount Blackburn (16,390ft). Once you arrive, strap on your crampons (which fit over most any hiking boot) and let your guide bring you to their favorite spots. Don’t forget your camera! Everywhere you turn there is another impressive view or surprising ice feature.
Duration: 5hrs, 6-7 mile roundtrip hike to and onto glacier
Starting with the same historic tour and nature hike as the Half Day Glacier Hike, this trip gives you more time on the ice to go further and see more. Hike through slot canyons, find blue pools and discover seldom visited areas of the glacier. After lunch, head towards the Stairway Icefall (7,000 ft of ice!) following the ridges carved in the ice by sun and water. Hike among winding creeks and impressive moulins, the vertical blue tubes carved by water tumbling into the ice. See as much terrain as possible or go slower and spend extra time in special places, either way a full day spent on the Root Glacier is always a day well spent. Go beyond the crowds and discover places even your guide has never been before!
